New Zealand tennis No1 Marina Erakovic has had a good start at the US$740,000 Carlsbad, California Premier WTA event.
Erakovic defeated Britain’s Anne Keothavong in the opening round at Carslbad in straight sets.
Erakovic, who is fresh from the doubles title last week at Stanford won this mornings match against 76th ranked Keothavong 6-4 6-0 in one hour 18 minutes.
The first set had Erakovic down a break and looking like she would have to take the match to three sets if she was to move into the second round. However the Kiwi was able to come from 2-4 down to reel off the next four games and take the set as her opponents serve fell apartment and Keothavong hit 10 double faults in the match. In the second set Erakovic raced through the games not giving Keothavong a chance to find any rhythm.
Erakovic is currently ranked 47 on the WTA rankings and takes on second seeded Slovak Dominka Cibulkova in the second round. Cibulkova is ranked at 14 in the world.
At the completion of Carlsbad, Erakovic will return to London for the Olympics.
