The annual Hutt News Xmas Tennis Tournament at Mitchell Park proved a real success in spite of 2 days of rain.
Junior tennis is thriving in the Hutt valley, total entries for the 4 age groups were 180 although only 2 girls in the 18s age group Meagan Brooks and Doris Berberic played the boys in fine Xmas spirit (when they were not running the catering as a fundraiser for their Atomic Tennis Melbourne trip. )
Thanks to Brian Haymes, Joe Glover and Gerard Farrell, the tournament was extended to 23rd December to allow the large field of players to complete their matches.
Hutt Valley players had some good matches. 10s Girls Singles and doubles was won By Lauren Beere (Lower Hutt), Although a small field, the change partner round robin doubles was a success..
Boys 10s Singles runner up was Trent Massam (Avalon) and Felix Humphries (Muritai) won the consolation. Trent was also runner up in the doubles with Joshua Snowdon-Poole.
Mel Kinsmen (Muritai) won the 12s Girls singles final from Miia Korpela (Lower Hutt), 10/7 in the super tie breaker after one set each at 4/6,6/1.

Katie Farrell and Esther George (Lower Hutt) won the 16s Girls Doubles. Katie was also runner up in the 14s Girls Singles to Rangi Aukino (6/3,6/4)
In the 14s Boys singles Thon Nguyen (Upper Hutt), Lucas Miller (Muritai) & Dominic Miller all made the semis from a draw of 43 but in the end Sam Piercey of Karori took the title from Thom.
Ashleigh Ward & Rebecca Clarke (Lower Hutt) won the Girls 14s Doubles from Katie Farrell and Hayley Pllu ( Muritai) 4/6,6/3,stb 10/6.
Thom Nguyen & Michael McGlinchey (Upper Hutt) were narrowly beaten by the Piercey twins Luke & Sam 6/4,6/4, a harder match than when the twins won their 16s Doubles.
With 4 days of beautiful weather and 2 days of rain we did well to only flag the 18s Boys doubles, and 14s Boys & Girls Consolations.

Some of these players are off to the junior Hardcourt Nationals in January – good luck to them.
As this tournament is all run by volunteers the surplus from the entry fees will go to the development fund for the renovation of the courts.
Thanks to all parents who assisted and Rebecca Williams and Liz Pllu who did some refereeing.
