News from Trevor Hinton (Development & Event Manager)

Hawkes Bay news this time revolves mostly around results. Residentials both Junior and Senior have been completed along with the post Xmas Junior Interclub and the finals of various Senior Interclubs, that at the time of the last newsletter were incomplete.

For me it has been another interesting season where some of the crop of older junior players have moved on and a group of new ones at the other end of the scale have just started on their tennis journey. Tennis is a game for a lifetime, I just wish so many would not take 20 years off in the middle of it, but life also needs to be taken care of, families, careers etc. Still I wax nostalgic on how things should be in the perfect world. All the best to everyone over the winter months and don’t forget to get out there and hit a few.

Lily Verhoeven and Daniel Rowe, winners of the Hinton Trophy for all round display of sportsmanship and regular supporters of all our events, always polite and give it 110 percent on court. They can play a bit as well.

Senior Interclub Results

Men’s Premier final between Greendale and HBLT was taken out by Greendale and the Reserve grade between HBLT New Vines and HBLT Mature Vintage was won by the New Vines, as the name would suggest this team is made up of younger players, and they proved too good for the older Mature Vintage. I wonder what names they will come up with next year. Perhaps ripening fruit and ageing Brew.

The Ladies A doubles final between HBLT Legends and HBLT Talents was won by the Legends, and the B doubles between Hastings and Hastings other team, Heretaunga B was taken out when Hastings triumphed over Heretaunga B.

The A league whilst not strictly an Interclub based competition was won by the Robbie Reynolds led HBLT team and just like the pre season comp where the Reuben Cooper led HBLT team came out on top, this too was a closely fought affair.

The Men’s senior Residential winner was Luke Donovan, he beat a tiring Jason Kitching, who had come through a very hard fought 3 set 3 hour victory over Damon Curtis. Donovan had no trouble overcoming an ageing Trevor Hinton in his semi.

The ladies winner was Lynette Rowe, after she had accounted for Carole Rowsell, in her own 3 set semi final tussle, she then went on to beat Karen Wakelin in the final in straight sets.

Proud mum Herora Brown and daughters Erena and Hinewai Hosford, they were part of the Hastings B grade winning team.

Well done to those HB players that went on to represent HB at Regional level. Robbie Reynolds Boys 14’s, Olivia Addis Girls 14’s (gold medalist) Bethany Illemann reserve, Finn Reynolds, Andrew Clifford and Jonty Sabiston 12’s boys. Well done to all of you.

Congratulations to Finn Reynolds who has also played for the NZ 12’s team this year and is included as non travelling reserve for the 14’s side. Hang in there Finn, one of them could stub his toe between now and going away.

One on One
“People think this is all about the top players hitting tennis balls and they talk about technique and strategy and how important that is. But they don’t understand the essence of competition. This is one-on-one, two players out there fighting each other with everything they have, trying to bring the best out of themselves. The difference at this level of the game is all in the head and in the heart.”
